Smith Appointed BCSD Assistant Superintendent for Instruction

The Brockport Central School District has appointed Anthony Smith as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, effective on July 1, 2026. The Board of Education approved his appointment at its June 2 meeting.
“We were fortunate to have a strong pool of highly qualified candidates, making for a thoughtful and particularly difficult decision,” Superintendent Bruno shared. “We extend our sincere appreciation to all who participated in and supported the selection process.”
Smith brings a deep foundation of instructional expertise, innovative leadership, and an unwavering commitment to student success. He began his career as an elementary teacher, spending ten years in the classroom, an experience that continues to shape and inform his approach to instructional leadership.
As a model classroom teacher for the America’s Choice program, Smith opened his classroom to educators and school leaders as a demonstration site for effective literacy instruction and workshop-based teaching practices. In this role, he modeled the implementation of readers’ and writers’ workshops, including clear mini-lessons, differentiated small-group instruction, and the use of formative assessment to guide instructional decisions. He facilitated classroom visits, debriefed colleagues on instructional practices, and supported the consistent implementation of research-based strategies aligned with district and program expectations. This work required not only exceptional instructional practice, but also the ability to reflect on student outcomes, articulate effective decision-making, and build the instructional capacity of fellow educators through collaborative professional learning.
Smith’s leadership and professionalism were recognized early in his career. He was named Teacher of the Year by his peers and served as a peer-elected member of his School-Based Planning Team for three consecutive years, reflecting the trust and respect he earned among colleagues. He later served as a districtwide instructional coach, supporting educators across the system and co-leading the development of an e-learning program designed to expand online credit recovery opportunities for students.
In the next phase of his professional journey, Smith served as an administrator charged with designing and leading a New York State P-TECH high school in Rochester. In this role, he spearheaded the development of a comprehensive educational pathway for grades 9–14, focused on high-demand fields in information technology and cybersecurity. He successfully secured state grant funding, cultivated strategic partnerships with higher education institutions and industry leaders, and worked collaboratively with educators to align curriculum and instructional experiences with college and workforce expectations. Under his leadership, students were provided with meaningful opportunities for job shadowing, mentorships, and internships, creating authentic, real-world connections to their learning. The program’s success and continued growth reflect his visionary leadership, innovative mindset, and unwavering commitment to creating career-connected learning experiences that prepare students to thrive in both higher education and the modern workforce.
Since joining Brockport CSD in 2017 as Director of Technology, Smith has positioned the district as a leader in Monroe County by advancing innovative technologies while maintaining a steadfast focus on cybersecurity and system integrity. Under his leadership, Brockport became the first district in the region to implement multi-factor authentication, significantly strengthening district cybersecurity practices. He has also played an integral role in the design and development of Solara as a tool to support staff, as well as the district’s micro-badging system aligned to its Portrait of a Graduate initiative.
Smith brings a collaborative leadership style, a strong commitment to instructional excellence, and a clear focus on improving student outcomes. District leaders are excited for the positive impact he will continue to have on its schools, staff, students, and broader learning community.
