Learn Braille and Become a Volunteer

Spencerport Lions Braille Service is offering Braille Transcription classes at the Gates/Spencerport Ambulance building, 116 Lyell Avenue in Spencerport. Classes begin Thursday, September 17, 2026, and meet weekly on Thursday mornings at 9 a.m. through May 2027.
Participants will begin by learning dot formations and forming words on a Perkins Brailler. They will then move to a Windows-based computer program that uses only six keys on the keyboard.
Students receive instruction, instructional materials, and use of a Brailler and Braille paper. Expect about two hours of homework per day while working toward Library of Congress transcriber certification.
After certification, Braillists work from home transcribing requested reading materials. Ongoing support and encouragement are provided at weekly meetings, where Braillists come together to proofread each other’s work.
To learn more or register for the class, call Mary Ann Knapp at 585-613-5956.
