Rochester Intergenerational Choir Day

Register by October 30
Rochester Intergenerational Choir Day (RICD) will be held on Saturday, November 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Hochstein School, 50 North Plymouth Avenue, Rochester. The event offers singers a fun-filled day working with three well-known local clinicians, Dr. Lee Wright, Jonathan Madden, and Dr. Philip Silvey, culminating in an informal performance of new songs (including a newly commissioned work) for singers of all ages. Each singer or choir will gain valuable experience in improvisational performance practice of spirituals plus two new choral works, each with a message that speaks to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
RICD is for singers in grades 4 through senior citizens, from schools, colleges, churches, voice studios, and the community. Choir directors are invited to bring their choirs. Participation is free, but registration is required by October 30 so organizers can send out music and plan for the day. Free-will donations will be happily accepted.
What to expect
Dr. Lee Wright will begin by introducing choral improvisation techniques with American Negro Spirituals. Taught in the oral tradition, this practice encourages singers to connect with the meaning of these songs and to let their own life experience create part of the living fabric of this important American folk music.
Jonathan Thomas Madden, composer, is currently a doctoral student in Choral Conducting at the University of Michigan. Singers will work with Jon to prepare his newest work, “STAND UNITED,” commissioned especially for RICD.
Dr. Philip E. Silvey is Professor of Music Teaching and Learning at the Eastman School of Music. Dr. Silvey’s compositions are beloved standards of contemporary choral literature. He will work with participants on his latest composition, “Walking Temples of Noise.”
There will be two break-out sessions featuring Dance and Yoga for Singers.
Participating choirs and singers will receive repertoire and practice tracks following registration. Singers should come prepared to spend the day working on these new compositions.
