BROCKPORT: Toney, Cuthbert Ulpian, an Island man — serene, kind, friendly. A positive presence wherever he went. Ulpian (“Ulpi”) Toney was well known throughout Brockport for the conversations he had with front-porch sitters, for the fruit salads he frequently gifted to neighbors and made for parties, and for attending the track meets and soccer games of neighborhood youth. A soccer player in his own youth, he served as a youth soccer referee for several years. He was an avid reader of the print version of The New York Times and a lover of country western and folk music. “I know a song about that,” he would declare, bursting into one of the many songs in his repertoire. Ulpian died at home of prostate cancer on October 6, 2026, his partner of 20 years, Margay Blackman, by his side. Ulpi was born on the island of Bequia in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 1947. He comes from a big Vincentian family, most of whom emigrated to the U.S., England, and Canada.

He was predeceased by elder brothers, Hilton and Alwyn, Festus, Elton, and Fred; and sisters, Irene, Elgiva, Albertha. He leaves behind brothers, Joel and Sydney; and sisters, Ela, Barbara, Grace and Lois; a son, Shen; daughter-in-law, Jocelyn, and two granddaughters, Emera and Safyra; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was a loving stepfather to Meryn Hall, Margay’s daughter.

A gifted athlete, Ulpi was renowned as “the fastest man on the island,” which won him an athletic scholarship to Hiram College in Ohio, where he still holds the record in the 200-meter sprint. Prior to leaving St. Vincent, Ulpi taught high school geography. He majored in Political Science at Hiram, and earned a Master’s Degree in Journalism from Ohio State University. He never pursued journalism as a career, but was an excellent writer, winning a statewide short story contest in Ohio, and critiquing Margay’s many written compositions. After coming to Brockport in 2008, Ulpi was employed, until COVID, as a driver for Arc of Monroe. His favorite and final position was working for the Canal Corporation of NYS, inspecting the Erie Canal banks between Spencerport and Brockport on a walking route. No longer able to run, he relished the 8-mile walk and the people he interacted with on his daily route. We will celebrate Ulpi’s life in Brockport at the 2027 Summer Solstice.

Donations in Ulpi’s memory can be made to the following: (by check) “Running with the Angels, Wendell Hercules Scholarship Fund,” and sent to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 3825 East Henrietta Road, Henrietta, NY 14467. HOLLEY: Machamer, Susan Hurd, died October 7, 2026. Born August 1, 1933, to Leland and Betty Hurd of Holley, she is survived by her daughters, Mary, Amy, and Molly Machamer; brother, Zeke Hurd; grandchildren, Annabelle Mannard, Amelia Sidonio, Annie and James Agar; sons-in-law, George Mannard, Joe Sidonio, and Mike Agar; numerous cousins; her Hurd Orchards family and household helpers, for whom she was so grateful. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 67 years, Jeff, and her mother and father. Sue was raised in Holley, her early years spent freely in orchards and pastures on the family fruit farm, Hurd Orchards. Sue graduated from Holley High School (1951), was a Delta Gamma and earned a journalism degree from Cornell University (1955), and received her master’s degree in teaching from the University of Rochester (1956). It was at Cornell where she met her lifelong partner, Jeff, in freshman English class. Over their lifetime together, Sue and Jeff traveled far and wide, with Jeff’s explorations and geological expertise often taking them off the beaten path to places like Turkey, Peru, Colombia, Panama, Brazil, Sweden, Norway, Cornwall, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Sue returned to Hurd Orchards to farm full-time with her family in 1985, forging her own unique path forward and bringing sparkle and determination to the family enterprise.  Sue fell in love with the piano by the age of six and became an accomplished pianist. Later, she studied organ, learning to play the pipe organ at Cornell’s Sage Chapel. For decades, she was the organist at Holley Presbyterian Church, playing the instrument her ancestors brought down the Erie Canal. With a profound love for both classical and sacred music, she was deeply proud to bring music to life for many.

There will be no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to join Susan’s family for a Celebration of Her Life on Sunday, October 18 at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Holley, 34 East Albion Street, Holley. Donations in her memory can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Holley (address above), The National Trust for Historic Preservation (savingplaces.org), or The Cornell Club-New York (cornellclubnyc.com). Arrangements entrusted to the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Home of Holley. To share a special memory of Susan, please visit www.mitchellfamilyfuneralhomes.com.
