An early morning chill gave way to beautiful skies and cheery smiles as 510 Brockport Central School students walked and biked with their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and pre-school siblings at the 21st annual Brockport Walk To School Day on October 7. Walk To School Day is an international event held on the first Wednesday of October to celebrate the health benefits of walking. It’s a toss-up to say who enjoys the walk more: the students or the many volunteers who greet and count them, handing out apples and small novelties. Barclay School won the Walk To School Trophy for its ninth consecutive time, and the eighth grade won the prize as the top middle school class. Congratulations!
An event of this size cannot succeed without the help of many people and organizations. We would like to acknowledge and thank our many supporters, including the Brockport School District, the Brockport Alumni Association, the Brockport Police Department, Brockport businesses including Tim Hortons, Wegmans, and Chick-fil-A, SUNY Brockport athletic teams including softball, baseball, women’s basketball, and flag football, area farms (Kalir, Robb, and Kirby) for apples, and Walk!Bike!Brockport!. We thank the high school cheerleaders for their enthusiastic support of the student walkers, art students for their contribution of selfie frames, and Key Club members for their hands-on help. Thanks to the Brockport Kiwanis Club members for their usual superb job at the coffee tent, and to Oak Orchard Health and the Brockport Kiwanis Club for their financial contributions.
Our deepest gratitude goes to the counters who get to school early for the middle and high school students, then go to the elementary schools for the same activity, and our many greeters who encourage students along the way. You put a smile on everyone’s face!
