Greece United Methodist Church celebrates 175 years
In 1841, a group from the Rochester area met for church services at School #9, a cobblestone school house located on Long Pond Road in Greece.
They decided to present the minister with a request including “16 or 17” names affixed asking that a class be organized. Accordingly, after public service on July 25, 1841, Elder William Williams acknowledged 16 persons as full members of the Methodist Protestant Church, Genesee Conference.
Since then, “Class #1 of the Methodist Protestant Church of Greece” has met.
On Sunday, July 24 the Greece United Methodist Church will celebrate its 175th anniversary with a special praise and worship service in the sanctuary at 1924 Maiden Lane at 10 a.m. followed by a luncheon. The congregation will bury a Time Capsule to be opened in 2041 to celebrate the Bicentennial.
All are welcome to the service. Anyone who has a memory of the church are encouraged to share it. Come and see the legacy of “16 or 17” names and Elder William Williams.
