As the 2016-17 school year accelerates into full gear, Brockport Central School District would like to remind motorists of school bus safety practices.
The key is to remain alert and watch for buses and students walking alongside the road traveling to bus stops or school buildings. Be aware of flashing amber lights indicating that the school bus is preparing to stop and red lights signifying that children are getting on or off the school bus.
According to state law, motorists must stop when the red lights are flashing. Brockport school bus drivers are trained to pull over to relieve traffic, but only when they are able to do so safely.
According to the NYS Education Department, the number of passing motorist fatalities has decreased steadily over the last five decades in New York State, however, the number of close calls or near misses continue to plague the school transportation system.
Motorists convicted of passing a stopped school bus while children are loading or unloading are subject to a five-point violation, a $250-$400 fine or 30 day imprisonment for the first conviction.
