Neighbors have come and gone on the east end of Dunbar Road in Hilton but some traditions have been carried on. Residents on Dunbar Road recently celebrated the 50th year of the neighborhood clambake with over fifty adults gathered together at Rich and Chris Losey’s residence, where neighbors enjoyed an evening of great food, music, conversation and a walk through memory lane with pictures posted from the past fifty years.
The first clambake started in 1966 when a small group of neighbors (The Dills, Strongs and Lippincotts) decided to steam some clams and spend an evening together reminiscing about the summer. The following year others joined in and before long neighbors all the way to Collamer Road attended.
Neighbors generously open up their garages for the event and the special equipment (built many years ago by the Coca Cola Plant in Rochester) is fired up for steaming the clams, barbecuing chicken, boiling the salt potatoes and corn and simmering a special clam broth recipe. Piles of shrimp and many hors d’oeuvres are enjoyed as people await the steamed clams. Everyone enjoys catching up in conversation, meeting new neighbors, playing cards and Pictionary, and a great campfire at the close of the evening.
Dick Lippincott was honored as the only neighbor who attended the first clambake and has only missed one or two years of attending to date. He acknowledged the leadership of Pat and Tony Pearce over the years that really kept things going. Dick has not only stored all the equipment for years but also has, along with his son, Tom, taken leadership in steaming the clams and doing the grilling and cooking.
Residents on Dunbar Road once again look forward to the 51st Neighborhood Clambake.
