Charlie McMahon helped stake Spencerport to an 8-2 halftime lead with four of his six goals in their 18-5 victory over Gates-Chili in Section V playoff quarterfinal action.
The Rangers spent the first six minutes of the game in the offensive zone and McMahon staked them to an early 1-0 lead after a feed from Mark Schnauber at 2:32.
Junior Jonathan Agness set up the next three Rangers goals with two goals from Owen Van Wie sandwiching McMahon’s second goal to give them a 4-0 lead after the first quarter.
McMahon completed his hat trick just 1:23 into the second on a pass from Jack Lehtonen before Gates-Chili finally got on the scoreboard to make it 5-1.
McMahon and Lehtonen tallied goals less than two minutes apart and Agness converted as the halftime horn sounded to make it 8-2 Rangers.
Long stick Joe Curcio intercepted a midfield pass and drove to the net to open the second half scoring at 2:13. Lehtonen then hit from long range 59 seconds later to put the Rangers ahead 10-2.
After the Spartans scored twice to narrow the Rangers lead to 10-4, Curcio crated a turnover at midfield before Agness, from his office behind the opponent’s net, fed Schnauber for a goal at 8:17.
Agness then fed McMahon just eight seconds later and Van Wie scored off a rebound from Lehtonen’s shot to complete his hat trick and make it 13-4 Rangers after three quarters.
Spencerport added five more goals in the fourth quarter with McMahon netting his sixth of the game at 2:20, senior Josh Griffin scoring with an assist from Schnauber and Agness ducking under the defender and scoring at 8:17 for their 16th goal of the game.
Van Wie scored his fourth of the contest at 8:45 and sophomore Zach Edwards finished the scoring after an unselfish pass from Griffin in the final minute.
The Rangers won 18 draws and sophomore goalie Ryan Griffin was credited with four saves in earning the win.
Spencerport advanced to the semi-finals where they were to battle Canandaigua.
