Genesee Country Museum busy preparing for the holidays

Genesee Country Village & Museum will be all abuzz on Saturday, November 18, with cooking, baking, brewing, candle making, meat processing and decorating as villagers, as in ages past, get ready for the holidays.

First came the butchering, then the smoking, salting and curing meats, and sausage-making, enough to last through the coming winter. That was followed by the rendering of lard from animal fat for making candles. Only after the root cellar was finally stocked, was it time to cook, bake and decorate for the holiday feast. This 19th-century family endeavor is revived village-wide in Genesee Country Village & Museum’s program Preparing for the Holidays.

Visitors can see and, at times, participate in the activities that will fill the historic village. Included will be butchering of a hog, as well as the tasting of some of the food being prepared for the holiday meal. One of the village smoke houses will be in operation with demonstrations of salting and brining. Other activities abound, including a separate program – Crafts at Christmas – that gives the entire family the opportunity to create special gifts and ornaments.

The historic village will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on November 18. General admission is $10, youth 18 and under and museum members are free, and the cost of the craft program is $5 for each of five crafts. (No need to purchase admission.)
