The Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association was incorporated on August 10, 1936, approximately 46 years after the founding of the Spencerport Fire Department in 1890. This new Association was formed, in part, because of the recent purchase of the property at 75 South Union Street, currently known as the Firemen’s Field. Prior to this purchase, the Spencerport Fire Department had already been hosting a Carnival or Field Days since the late 1920s.
This was the largest fundraiser of the day and this tradition has continued to be one of the main sources of funding for the Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association for over 90 years. The carnival has turned into a great community event that many look forward to. The Youth/Kiddie Parade on Wednesday night, the Grand Firemen’s Parade on Thursday, with many memories made, and old friendships rekindled on Friday and Saturday. The tradition will continue, but not this year.
Due to the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the public health crisis of COVID-19, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association Annual Carnival. Due to the latest announcement by Governor Cuomo to begin a gradual re-opening of the state by region, the time-frame that has been outlined will not make it possible to hold large-gathering events until at least the end of June, or later. We know this is disappointing, but as first responders, we must make the safety of our members and of our community the highest priority.
At this time, the Association’s Board of Directors are taking the necessary steps to ensure that our budgetary obligations are being met and that we maintain our continuity of operations. Rest assured, our community will receive the same level of professional service that is expected from us and we remain ready to serve you.
In closing, we understand that money will be tight this year for everyone. We would ask that you continue to support and patronize our local businesses during this difficult time. Spencerport truly is, “Someplace Special” and on behalf of our organization, thank you. We also ask that if you can help us, please do so, by participating in our annual fund drive occuring at the end of August, or think of us as part of your charitable giving to the United Way.
