Rochester Recreation Festival returning to Spencerport

Plans are underway for the second annual Rochester Recreation Festival based at the Spencerport Firemen’s Field on Saturday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (rain or shine). The main sponsor for this year’s festival is United Health Care.

This event has been modified to accommodate the extra precautions necessary to participate safely within social distancing guidelines. People are urged to wear masks and practice social distancing at the event.

This year’s festival, focused on encouraging people to be active and participate in a variety of outdoor activities, will be in two parts. The first part is the actual on-site activities on September 12. Vendors and demonstrators are encouraged to apply to participate in this year’s festival. Recreation-based organizations receive a free space at this year’s festival if they apply by September 1. This offers an opportunity for recreation clubs and teams to promote themselves.

Activities this year will include an on-site scavenger hunt; lawn games including corn hole, mini-golf, disc golf, mega tic tac toe, and an agility challenge; making a kite; making a succulent garden; rock stacking; and making a bubble wand

The second part is a new event, a month-long scavenger hunt – Rec Fest Challenge – that involves traveling to sites around the Greater Rochester area, exploring the site, and completing a recreational activity. Points will be awarded for each location visited, documented (with phone or digital camera), and uploaded to Facebook or Instagram. The further away the location, the higher number of points awarded. Additional points will be awarded for actually participating in an activity at the site. For example, if you go to High Falls and snap a photo there, you will get points. If you are photographed jogging across the Ponce de Reins Bridge at High Falls, that activity will be worth more points. More activity equals more points. This is set up as an individual or team event. Those who pay a modest registration fee will also be eligible for prizes. Registration and details will be available on the website: http://www.rocrecfest.com/activities/challenge. On-line registration is required to participate. Points accumulated on-site at Rochester Rec Fest will be added to the teams’ total score.

Adult and high school-age volunteers are needed to set up, pack up, and help supervise activities at the Spencerport Firemen’s Field on September 12. To sign up, call 851-1629 or email info@rocrecfest.com. Leave your name and phone number, and someone will contact you to discuss specific volunteer opportunities and times.

Any Festival or Rec Fest Challenge changes or updates (including those related to NYS health regulations) will be posted on the website, www.rocrecfest.com, and social media.
