Donovan Mitchell named August 2020 Hickok Belt® Award Winner
Utah Jazz shooting guard Donovan Mitchell has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for the month of August 2020. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). On August 17, Mitchell scored 57 points in the first round Game 1 against the Denver Nuggets. It was the first time opposing players, Mitchell and Jamal Murray of the Denver Nuggets, have gone 45 plus points in a playoff game. This has never happened in the history of the NBA. Six days later, on August 23, the 24-year-old scored 51 points for the second time in a playoff series, one for the record books.
Other finalists for the month of August in order of how the NSMA voters ranked them were: Yu Darvish (baseball), Jose Abreu (baseball), Kevin Harvick (auto racing), Dustin Johnson (golf), and Jon Rahm (golf) – tie, Nathan McKinnon (hockey), Sophia Popov (golf), Novak Djokovic (tennis), and Alexander Povetkin (boxing).
Donovan Mitchell’s selection as the Hickok Belt® Award winner for August 2020 recognizes him as “the best of the best” in professional sports for the month. It also makes him the fifth candidate eligible to receive the overall Hickok Belt® Award for 2020, joining Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Tyson Fury, and Patrick Mahomes.
