Virtual health program supports healthy lifestyle changes during pandemic

Many people have felt stuck in their health journeys during the pandemic. The Center for Community Health & Prevention at URMC has been able to transition many of its community-based programs focused on nutrition and physical education to virtual learning – supporting community members to lead healthier lives while preventing chronic disease.

One of the programs that has continued virtually is the Center’s eight-week Promote Health. Prevent Cancer. program. In partnership with Wilmot Cancer Institute, the program empowers participants to make and maintain changes in diet, physical activity, and exposures. Each class combines 45 minutes of nutrition education, discussing everything from how to read nutrition labels to the benefits of eating a plant-based diet, and 15 minutes of physical activity – all in a group setting over Zoom.

The next eight-week online program is launching a new class that is being offered two times for participants’ convenience. Participants in the Finger Lakes region can register for either a Tuesday morning class, starting October 6, from 11 a.m. to noon or a Thursday evening class, starting October 8, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Spots are limited. Those interested can contact Sarah Merritt, regional program manager of Promote Health. Prevent Cancer, at 738-5539 or Sarah_Merritt@urmc.rochester.edu.
