A Veterans Day win/win in Churchville
by Pamela Moore,
Harvey C. Noone Legion Family
Beginning November 7 and continuing through Veterans Day, Harvey C. Noone Legion Family members, along with Cub Scout Pack 156 and other volunteers, planted hundreds of daffodils in the community’s Living Fields of Honor located along the Westshore Rail Trail and at the Legion. The Cub Scout motto is “Do Your Best” and they fulfilled that motto not only by honoring all our Hometown Heroes by planting bulbs, they did so in the dark using lights.
Harvey C. Noone Legion, led by Commander Gilbert Budd, conducted the Veterans Day Ceremony at the WWI Monument in the Newman Riga Library Park.
Following the Ceremony a Tribute Lunch for Veterans was hosted by the Churchville Riga Chamber of Commerce at the Legion. Guest speaker Jason Tiefel, Regional CEO for Toys for Tots, helped the Legion Family kick off its 7th Annual Toys for Tots Campaign by telling the Toys for Tots story, which began in 1947 when a Marine decided that every child should have a toy at Christmas. Through December 10, those wishing to support the Legion Family’s project can drop off new, unwrapped toys and books at the Legion, Jake’s Pub in North Chili, or the Riga Newman Library. This week was a win/win because as the community honored its veterans, its veterans remained hard at work continuing to serve the community.
