Spencerport eighth-grader Kya Vargas won the School of Design Young Designer Award (Grade 6, 7, 8) at the RIT’s START HERE 2022 High School / Middle School Art Exhibition for her pen and ink drawing titled Under the Earth. The annual START HERE invitational exhibition is a showcase of middle and high school student artwork selected by their teachers. It’s an eclectic display, with mediums ranging from painting and photography to design and ceramics to animation and drawing, and more.
Kya’s teacher, Kathleen Shaffer-Heeks, said, “I was so fortunate to have Kya in my eighth grade art class this year. She is always kind and thoughtful to others. She puts forth her best effort in all her artwork. She is truly an exceptional artist. I know Kya will achieve great success in whatever her goals are. It was a pleasure to have her as a student.”
