Brockport: Philip Van Der Karr passed away peacefully on July 23, 2022. He is survived by his wife Ellen; his four children Mark Van Der Karr (Blossom Murphy), John (Anne) Van Der Karr, Karen (Dan) Cottom, and Carol Van Der Karr; his grandchildren Jane Van Der Karr (Joseph Pace), Eric Van Der Karr (Jessica Li), Christopher Cottom, Sarah Van Der Karr, Ryan Cottom, Mitchell Cottom; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Waverly, NY, he went to Notre Dame University where he was a member of the marching band, and then on to Georgetown University for his law degree. After working in private practice, he joined the County Attorney’s Office of Ontario County in Canandaigua in 1981 until his retirement in 2015. Phil thrived on helping others and enjoyed his work supporting and advocating for families, children, and people in need. He appreciated all his colleagues.
Throughout his life, Phil enjoyed the outdoors and spent his recreational time fishing, camping, and boating. He loved the Adirondacks and spent many vacations camping on the islands of Lake George. His fishing adventures took him to Alaska, Canada, and all over New York. He loved all kinds of boats and was always happy on the water.
There is nothing Phil loved more than his family. He adored and admired his wife of 63 years, Ellen. He was a friend, advisor and cheerleader to his four children and six grandchildren and supported their education, goals, and interests. His favorite time of year was preparing for big family Christmas celebrations.
Phil will be remembered for his booming laugh, great style, sharp humor, and his kindness to all.
Family will receive friends at the Fowler Funeral Home, 340 West Avenue, Brockport, on Sunday, July 31st from 11:00 AM – 12:00, noon, with a Celebration of Life beginning at noon.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that people consider donating to the American Cancer Society or the Monroe Community Hospital Foundation. The family would like to thank all the health care providers of Monroe Community Hospital and Rochester General Hospital for their great care of Phil in this past year.
