Local athletes prepare for the fall season at Roberts Wesleyan

Roberts Wesleyan College conducted Fall Sports Media Day for 97 varsity athletes on five teams on August 23.

Members of the women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer and women’s soccer squads had their official team and individual photos taken, participated in preseason interviews and enjoyed social media opportunities with their teammates.

“This is great,” Director of Athletics Bob Segave said. “Providing a positive student-athlete experience is a top priority at Roberts and I am glad to see so many smiles on so many faces. The smiles tell me that everyone is looking forward to the season ahead. It is a great day to be a Redhawk.”

Junior Laura Amaya and sophomore Teagan Weber donned pink hats during the women’s volleyball session to pay homage to their native Texas.

The women’s volleyball team was preparing to open its season at the Saint Anselm/Southern New Hampshire University Tournament on August 27 and Amaya said Media Day helped set the scene for what’s next.

“I think that finally putting that game jersey on after all of those months really reminds you that the season is near and it’s almost time to play,” Amaya said.

The cross country team was preparing for its season opener on September 1 at Houghton University’s Short Course. Jennifer Zambuto, a senior from Churchville-Chili, enjoyed the extra time with her teammates.

“It was definitely a cool experience,” Zambuto said. “It was nice just having an hour to come together and appreciate our time together.”

Both the men’s and women’s team made the most of their chance to take fun, small-group pictures in front of a backdrop.

“It’s fun,” said Emma Taylor, a freshman soccer player from Spencerport. “It’s good to see a bunch of people come out of their shells and express themselves.”

Roberts, the only Division II athletic program in the Rochester area, plans to host similar Media Days for its winter and spring teams.
