Members of the three Brockport service clubs recently attended the annual dinner to celebrate the joint bell-ringing results during the Salvation Army’s local Christmas 2012 fundraising campaign.
Captains Marci and Randy Orr lauded the club members and the rest of the local volunteers for their efforts. They noted that Rochester was among the first Salvation Army locations in the USA (1884); the Salvation Army was founded in England in the 1820’s.
Brockport volunteers collected $13,016 during December. The winner of the annual interclub contest to see which club could raise the most money was the Brockport Lions Club with a near-record $2,050. The clubs share an additional date, the last Saturday before Christmas, which raised $1,704.50.
Thanks to Dr. Dan Perry’s leadership, several other groups joined the service club members to help reach that total above. He urges church members to get involved during the week, noting that this year the Mormon and the Brockport Free Methodist Churches joined in along with recruits from the community at large. Mahan’s Liquor Store and Walmart were bell ringing sites.
Those knowing someone in need of assistance may also contact Perry, (585) 637-5398, to see if the Salvation Army can be of help. Perry and BCSD social worker Pat Fink described some of the ways that the Brockport area folks had benefited this past year from the 2011 monies. These included, food, clothing, medicines, school supplies – and it is all completely confidential. Fink stressed that those receiving the aid are sincerely appreciative, needy and frequently surprised by the help they receive.
Individuals and groups who wish to volunteer for bell-ringing duties during December 2013 should contact their favorite service club or Dr. Perry. Donation of a couple of hours of your time can make a real difference to the needy in our community, service club members say.
