Brockport hosts New York bike tours

July in Brockport means the bike tours are coming.

535 bikers arrived in Brockport on Monday, July 14. This was stage two, Medina to Pittsford, of Parks and Trails New York’s 16th Annual 400 miles bicycle tour along the legendary Erie Canal from Buffalo to Albany.

Sunday, July 20, 135 bicyclists pitched their tents in the meadow around Brockport’s Volunteer Firemen’s Exempt Benevolent Association building on West Avenue. These hearty cyclists were doing the Great Big FANY Ride – a 500-mile tour across the back roads of New York from Niagara Falls to Saratoga Springs.

When the Erie Canal riders reached Brockport, Walk! Bike! Brockport (WBB) – a not for profit organization – greeted them at the Main Street Lift Bridge. There they were welcomed with water and information about the village. Many participants crossed the Main Street Bridge, had lunch in Brockport and reported how much they enjoyed Brockport’s historic Main Street and Canalfront Welcome Center. Bicycle Outfitters was on hand to assist cyclists needing repairs.
