RRH Chemical Dependency Services receives LGBTQ-Affirming Care Endorsement

Rochester Regional Health (RRH) Chemical Dependency is among one of the first programs in New York State to receive the LGBTQ-Affirming Care Endorsement from the Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), demonstrating proficiency in meeting the unique needs of the LGBTQ+ community as it relates to substance use disorder (SUD) services.

Experts say identifying as LGBTQ+ is not in itself a risk factor, but stigma, discrimination, unsafe home, work, and/or school environments and lack of social spaces can all contribute to substance use and other mental health issues for those in the LGBTQ+ community.

Research finds individuals in the LGBTQ+ community have an increased risk for substance use and other mental health disorders. They’re more likely to use illicit drugs, smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol or use marijuana and/or pain relievers. They are also more likely to contemplate, attempt and complete suicide. While many may seek treatment, there are few programs offering specialized services that meet their needs.

With this designation, RRH LGBTQ-Affirming Care chemical dependency programs will be listed on the OASAS LGBTQ+ webpage and the programs can easily be found when someone is searching for local providers. These culturally-responsive programs are working to break down the barriers that can sometimes prevent people from seeking treatment, and improve the outcome of those fighting addiction.

RRH offers individual, group or peer recovery LGBTQ-Affirmative Care services in several inpatient and outpatient locations. To learn more, go to https://www.rochesterregional.org/services/chemical-dependency/lgbtq.
