Residents of area school districts went to the polls on Thursday, May 16 to vote on budgets for the 2023-2024 school year, propositions and election of school board members.
Brockport
Proposition 1 (2023-24 school budget of $92,400,067) passed with 737 yes votes to 352 no votes. Proposition 2 (2023 Bus Purchase Capital Reserve Fund) passed with 748 in favor and 340 opposed. Proposition 3 (2023 Building Capital Reserve Fund) passed, receiving 760 yes votes and 327 no votes. Two five-year terms on the Board of Education went to Robert Lewis with 617 votes and Michael Turbeville with 769 votes. Benjamin Reed received 533 votes.
Byron-Bergen
Proposition 1 – 2023-2024 school budget, passed 380-108. Proposition #2 – School Vehicle Replacement, passed 386-105. Proposition #3 – New 2023 Capital Reserve to Replace Old 2019 Capital Reserve, passed 372-116. Proposition #4 – New 2023 Technology and Equipment Reserve, passed 368-121. The results of the Board of Education election are as follows: Lisa Forsyth 331, Cindy Matthews 300, Lynn Smith 283 and Amy Phillips 270. Forsyth and Matthews will both serve full 3-year terms. Smith will serve a partial 13.5 month term.
Churchville-Chili
Proposition 1, the District’s 2023-24 budget of $99,258,220 was approved with a total of 651 yes votes to 237 no votes. Proposition 2, purchase of eight 66-passenger school buses at an estimated maximum cost of $1,350,000, was approved with 639 yes votes to 250 no votes. Proposition 3, which authorizes the district to purchase the property located at 5788 Buffalo Road for a price not to exceed $285,000, was approved with 667 yes votes to 219 no votes. Candidates Michelle Aloi (incumbent), Amy Wilson (incumbent) and Kevin Johnson have been elected to the Board of Education, effective July 1, 2023. They received 630, 612 and 531 votes, respectively. The fourth candidate, Leah Martorana, received 504 votes.
Hilton
Proposition 1 (2023-2024 budget) was approved with 1,377 yes votes to 846 no votes. The $99,383,572 plan for the school year is an 8.04 percent increase over last year’s budget with zero increase in the tax levy. The Board of Education sets the tax rate in August. Proposition 2 (Bus Purchase) passed with 1,429 yes votes to 790 no votes. Kaylee Bennett (929) and Kristine Price (855) were elected to the Board of Education. Other candidates were Jack Palmeri (786), Mike Zillious (701), Melissa Levato (682) and Lynda Donovan (428).
Holley
Voters passed the budget with 333 yes votes and 148 no votes. The Purchase of Replacement School Buses proposition passed with 334 yes votes and 149 no votes. The budget for the Holley Community Free Library passed with 354 yes votes and 130 no votes. Holley voters also elected Trina Lorentz (324 votes) and Robin Silvis (281 votes) to the Board of Education for three-year terms.
Kendall
Voters passed the budget with 131 yes votes and 29 no votes. The Transportation Reserve Fund Usage proposition passed with 137 yes votes and 25 no votes. Rachel Fisken (144 votes) was elected to the Board of Education for a five-year term.
Spencerport
A total of 1,371 Spencerport School District residents voted this year, with the following results: Proposition 1: the 2023-24 budget of $92,744,041: 792 in favor (58%) and 573 opposed (42%). Proposition 2: establish a capital reserve for purchase of bus and motor-vehicles: 861 in favor (64%) and 494 opposed (36%). The top three candidates elected to the Board of Education were Marsha Hinman (1,007), Lori Stone (872) and David Gibbardo (805). Jonathan Schallmo received 592 votes.
