Residents of North Chili held a demonstration at the corner of Buffalo Road and Attridge Road on Saturday, August 5, to voice their displeasure with the Chili Town Board over the increase in multi-family residential developments in the area.
“There is no end to it and our elected representatives have made it clear that our voices and concerns mean nothing to them,” said Zoi Christanis.
At their meeting on June 14, the Town Board voted 3-2 to rezone the parcel of land at 4423 Buffalo Road from single family residential to multi-family residential. The resolution also included rezoning the westerly portion of 4415 Buffalo Road from general business to multi-family residential. The developer plans to build townhomes on the site as well as apartments above a professional building.
Several residents spoke against the rezoning at this meeting and at the public hearing in May, citing issues like traffic, drainage, crime, school overcrowding, impact on property values, and changing the nature of the area. A petition was also presented to the Board with over 400 signatures of those opposing the project.
“We are now addressing the Planning Board to try and save what is left of the character and hamlet of North Chili. Meanwhile, more land is being sold and we are greatly concerned,” said Christanis
Organizers said their demonstration was productive with many people stopping to ask questions.
