Men’s tennis future star Jannik Sinner has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for the month of January 2024. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). The voters selected Sinner based on his performance in winning his first Australian Open title. The fast-rising star from Italy upset 10-time reigning champion Novak Djokovic in the semi finals, crushing his opponent early. It was Djokovic’s first defeat at the Australian Open since 2018. In the final, he beat Daniil Medvedev of Russia to win the Australian Open, in men’s singles, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. At the age of 22, Sinner became the youngest man to win the Australian Open.
Other finalists for the month of January in order of how the NSMA ranked them included: Aryna Sabalenka (tennis), Luka Doncic (basketball), Ilia Malinin (figure skating), Amber Glenn (figure skating), Jared Goff (football), Nathan MacKinnon (hockey), Stuart Skinner (hockey), Ismael Barroso (boxing), and Bill O’Neill (bowling).
Sinner’s selection as the Hickok Belt® winner for the month of January recognizes him as “the best of the best” in professional sports for the month, and makes him the first candidate eligible to receive the 2024 overall award. Other finalists will be named throughout the year based on NSMA voting.
