Bright Raven Gymnasts are #1 and #2 in state

Jake ScherbynJustin CicconeBright Raven Gymnasts finished on the very top at the USAG Level 5 New York State Championships held in Binghamton March 15 through 17 by taking first and second places in both all around and team competition. 9-year-old Jake Scherbyn of Gates won first place all around (64.30) and first place in three of the men’s individual events. His teammate, Justin Ciccone of Greece, placed second all around (64.00) and also won three events. Scherbyn was first on pommel horse, rings and vault and Ciccone took first on parallel bars, high bar and floor exercise.

The boys high all around scores earned them both a spot among the top seven to represent New York State at the Regional Championships April 27 at Marlboro Middle School in Morganville, New Jersey. At Regionals, the New York Team will compete with teams from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. The Bright Raven Level 5 boys also earned the first place team banner in the 7 to 10 age category with the help of Jon LeFrois of Gates. In the Level 5 all ages division, they took second just behind Kennett Gymnastics of Orange County with the efforts of Jesse Underwood of Greece. Underwood competed in the 11 and over age group earning third place on pommel horse and sixth place all around.

In the Level 4 competition, Simon Carmack, 11, of Brockport, and Alan Michael LeFrois, 10, of Gates also medalled at the State Meet. Carmack took second place on rings and LeFrois earned second on pommel horse.

In the Level 6 competition for ages 11 and over Brian Cannon of Chili earned third place on parallel bars, fifth on rings and seventh all around. Seth Daniels of Churchville finished fifth on vault and Matthew Miller of Spencerport was seventh on pommels. In the Level 7 competition for ages 13 and over, Robbie Cavuoto of Greece placed fifth all around.
