Volunteers throughout the United States will be giving back to their local communities by volunteering to clean historical markers during the fourth annual National Historic Marker Day on Friday, April 26, 2024.
National Historic Marker Day is an annual service event that encourages volunteers to help beautify their communities and learn about local history by cleaning historical markers. It was established in 2021 by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, a philanthropic organization based in Syracuse.
“Historical markers play an important role in our communities by helping to preserve history, educate the public, encourage pride of place and promote tourism,” said Bill Pomeroy, Founder and Trustee of the Pomeroy Foundation. “Without maintenance, markers can deteriorate from road salt, dirt, pollen and other contaminates. We commend the National Historic Marker Day volunteers who give back to their communities by cleaning markers so they can be enjoyed today and by future generations.”
Participation is open to the public. Those interested can learn more and register to volunteer through the official National Historic Marker Day webpage, https://www.wgpfoundation.org/national-historic-marker-day/. Registrants will have the opportunity to receive stickers, as well as be entered into a special giveaway after sending photos of their marker cleaning project to the Pomeroy Foundation.
