Sweden Bicentennial celebration to include “Old Home Weekend”

Shades of 1911! In that year, Brockport organized a very elaborate “Old Home Week.” Now, 103 years later, the Town of Sweden is planning a somewhat more modest echo of that event.
Its Bicentennial Celebration Committee is including in its program of activities for 2014 an “Old Home Weekend,” July 3 to 6. Sweden residents are urged to invite friends and family members who have moved away from Brockport to return for that occasion. A number of special events are planned to provide opportunities for the visitors to reacquaint with friends and acquaintances from the past.
The weekend will coincide with the annual 4th of July celebration at the Morgan-Manning House. In addition, the Sweden/Clarkson Recreation Center is organizing a “July 3rd Independence Day Spectacular” to be sponsored by Bonduelle USA Inc. It will include a 5K walk-run race, live country music, 3-on-3 Red, White and Blue Basketball Tournament, bounce houses, face painting, food and drink, ice cream, and fireworks. Picnics at the Sweden Town Park on the 5th and at the Farmers Musuem on the 6th will provide additional opportunities for socializing, according to organizers.
A Facebook® page will be created for visitors to register, providing personal contact information to facilitate the renewal of friendships and acquaintances. The committee is announcing this event this far in advance so that residents can issue invitations before the invitees have solidified their summer plans.
