Grant will help fund Healthy Eating initiative

The Hamlin Recreation Department has been awarded a $10,550 grant from the Rochester Area Community Foundation. The official announcement of the award was made at the December 9 meeting of the Hamlin Town Board.

The grant was based on The Healthy Eating Project, a project coordinated and developed by the Recreation Department’s Youth Group (the Hamlin Royals) Coordinator Anke Applebaum. “This project will not only allow us to finish the kitchen in the Charlie Maier Lodge, but we will be able to offer all the children in our care healthier snack choices, since we will be able to make many snacks ourselves and forego having to buy only pre-packaged and processed versions. I have worked as a chef for many years, so I will also be able to teach the children about better nutrition by getting the kids directly involved in the snack making. The Before and After School Program, the Day Camps during non-school days, as well as the Royals, will all get basic cooking lessons. Our goal is to get a bi-weekly family dinner night going where the children themselves have helped prepare the meal,” Applebaum said.

The Recreation Department hopes to have the kitchen completed by next summer.
