K9 Ryan Begins Well-Earned Retirement

After seven years of dedicated service to the Greece community, K9 Ryan has officially begun a well-earned retirement. He has found an exceptional home where he will continue to be cared for and appreciated. “K9 Ryan remains a valued member of our department, and we love him and are grateful for everything he has given to this department and the community,” the Greece Police Department said in a Facebook post.
K9 Ryan, a Belgian Malinois, served as a highly skilled working dog certified in patrol tracking and explosive detection. Throughout his career, he assisted in searches for missing persons, in locating wanted suspects, and in detecting explosives and firearms. Like many working K9s, Ryan thrived on having a job, and his drive and ability made him an important part of the department.
Following a significant knee injury during a training exercise last year, Ryan underwent extensive surgery and rehabilitation. As part of the transition into retirement, the GPD’s priority was clear: find the right home that could meet his physical needs, match his energy, and provide the structure he has known his entire life.
This process took time and careful consideration. Ryan was evaluated by professional trainers to assess his adaptability and behavior in new environments. Numerous organizations and individuals were contacted nationwide. While many expressed interest, the reality is that caring for a retired working K9, especially one with ongoing medical needs, is a significant responsibility, and finding the right fit is critical.
What followed was an incredible outpouring of support from the K9 community, including retired and active handlers, K9 trainers, rescue organizations, and medical professionals. That collective effort ultimately led to Mike Pintacura and his family in Florida.
Mike, a retired Green Beret who served 22 years as a Master Sergeant, and his wife have extensive experience with working dogs and have previously adopted retired K9s. Their home offers not only the space and environment Ryan needs, but also the understanding and care required to support him in this next phase of life.
Mike traveled to Greece to meet Ryan, learn about his history, and ensure it was the right fit. After spending time with the GPD team and Ryan’s former handler, he officially welcomed Ryan into his home. Since arriving in Florida in March, Ryan has been settling in well, quickly integrating with his new canine companions and adjusting to his new surroundings.
While Ryan is enjoying the space and freedom of his new home, his strong work ethic remains. Like many retired K9s, one of his biggest adjustments will simply be learning how to relax.
K9 Ryan has given his all to this community. It is only fitting that his retirement is spent in a home that reflects that same level of care.
The Greece Police Department is grateful to Big Mac’s K9 Rescue for helping expand the reach of this search and for their continued advocacy on behalf of retired working dogs. The department is also deeply grateful to Mike Pintacura and his family for opening their home to Ryan and providing him with the environment, structure, and care he needs in this next chapter of life.
