CCE Monroe County to offer Community Supported Agriculture Fair
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County is organizing a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Fair on Saturday, March 21, 2 to 5 p.m., at Abundance Food Co-Op, 571 South Avenue, Rochester.
During the Fair, numerous farms will present their CSA information, encouraging members of the public to join in on a share purchase of fresh, healthy, and locally grown produce and other agricultural products. People will be able to talk directly to farmers, learn about their growing practices and CSA models, and “find their farmer” – a CSA farm that would best suit their needs.
The Community Supported Agriculture model encourages a close relationship between a CSA farm and its members. By joining in, members support a local farm with an upfront financial commitment to buy its produce. The money goes directly to the farmers, providing them with an infusion of crucial cash for the upcoming season investments such as the purchase of new seeds or technology upgrades.
Although all traditional CSAs cut out the middle man while seeking support from local community members, their models can differ from each other. Some provide their members with a farm life experience, inviting their members to work in “the field” for a couple of hours weekly. The idea is that the members interact with the farmer directly and are involved in growing their own food. Other CSAs deliver a complete full or half-share package to a convenient drop off location for members to pick up. These members need not go directly to the farm. Also, a structure of payment can vary as some farmers require full payment upfront, and some use a pay-as-you-go system. Community members can select a CSA model that fits them best.
The CSA Fair is a free, interactive, and fun event. There will be live music, craft beverage tasting, and, most importantly, real farmers. For information, visit https://bit.ly/32RnnBL.
