Eagle Scout Project beautifies Clarkson and encourages exploration of town’s history

Last weekend, Alex Bieler of Boy Scout Troop 324 led a group of volunteers, including his parents, grandparents, fellow scouts from local troops and their families, and some friends, while they built and installed a landscaped perennial garden at the Clarkson Town Hall. The purple salvia, red cone flowers, and yellow gerber daisies will come back every year and bring a splash of color to the intersection of Lake and Ridge Roads throughout the summer. Alex also built a sturdy wooden bench and placed it under a shade tree for those visiting graves at the West Clarkson Cemetery. These are to be the visual “bookends” for his Eagle Scout project, which is a Clarkson Historical Scavenger Hunt app that is in the final approval stage at Google.

The app will allow people to learn about the buildings and people who are a part of the town’s history. Did you know that a young soldier from Clarkson who served in the Civil War and lost his life at the Battle of Gettysburg, is buried in West Clarkson? The app will ask you to locate his grave and discover what flower his mother compares him to in the inscription found there. As you answer questions in each location, you will learn more about the area and its history. Those interested in a bit of Clarkson history will soon be able to download the app and explore virtually.

Watch for the announcement of the app’s official release on Christa Filipowicz’s “Town of Clarkson Supervisor” Facebook page.
