Matt’s Coats for Kids holding annual distribution event

Matt’s Coats for Kids was established in 2004 in honor of Matthew J. Fitton, who lost his life in a car accident at the age of 20. Matt was always ready to share a smile or hug and had a willingness to help those in need.  This year Matt’s Coats for Kids marks sixteen years of practicing kindness and brightening the day of others, illustrating the character Matt displayed during his life. Over the years, the organization has helped distribute thousands of coats to children in need.

Local churches, community organizations, and businesses joined together in this mission to benefit area children. More than 30 locations throughout Monroe County, and one in Orleans County, are serving as drop-off points for donations of new and gently used coats, and new mittens,  gloves, and socks. Donations are being accepted through November 30. Visit https://mattscoats.webs.com/ for a list of drop-off locations.

Free coats will be distributed to those in need on Friday, December 4, from 2 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, December 5, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Brockport Elks Lodge Dome, 4400 Sweden Road, Brockport. Social workers, church workers, and teachers may come at 3 p.m. on Saturday to pick up larger quantities for their organizations.

No try-ons of any items will be allowed this year. Attendees are asked to practice social distancing. Hand sanitizing, temperature checks, and masks are required. Contact information will be placed on a confidential list in case contact tracing is required. Pre-registration is available through the Matt’s Coats for Kids Facebook page.
