Square Dancing… Does Anyone Do It Anymore? They certainly do!

The Western NY Federation of Square and Round Dancers Inc is a regional organization representing 16 dance clubs in the Rochester and Finger Lakes Area. Our region extends as far west to Buffalo, East to Syracuse, North to Fulton and South to Bath. You can find us at www.squaredancingrochester.org or on Facebook under the group: Square Dancing Rochester.

Modern square dance is a great way to exercise to music. The music used nowadays ranges from traditional to contemporary, Broadway, Sinatra, Elvis to George Straight, Elton John, Buble, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, etc.

A “square” of dancers is a team of 8 dancers working together to execute a series of dance moves given by a square dance “caller” to music. A 2-hour square dance can burn up to 500 calories or equivalent of walking several miles. Not only do you get exercise square dancing, but also you make new friends and social connections.

Dr Aaron Blackburn states “Square dancing is the perfect exercise… it combines low impact activity requiring constant movement and quick directional changes that help keep the body in shape. His study was based on physical examinations of both females and male square dancers. He concluded square dancers could expect to extend their lives by keeping fit thru dancing.

Every dance lesson is like a party. You have fun dancing with your friends. In addition to regular club dances, there are many opportunities to attend square dance festivals and camping groups nation-wide. There are square dance cruises and several national dance conventions held every year in various cities across the USA.
