To Raise Awareness of Suicide Prevention
Oak Orchard Health is sponsoring the Out of the Darkness Community Walk in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). The event will be held on Saturday, October 10, at Bullard Park in Albion and aims to raise awareness about suicide prevention, support mental health, and honor those whose lives have been affected by suicide.
The Out of the Darkness Walk is a nationwide movement led by AFSP. The event welcomes and encourages communities across the country to raise awareness and provide hope and support for individuals and families impacted by mental health challenges. Funds raised for the walk support research, education programs, and resources for those affected by suicide.
In 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that an estimated 14 million Americans were impacted by suicidal thoughts and 4.6 million planned a suicide attempt. Awareness initiatives help remind people that help is available; recovery is possible, and no one must face mental health struggles alone.
Oak Orchard Health is committed to improving access to mental and behavioral health services for people of all ages through comprehensive behavioral health care offered across its five-county region. Sponsoring the Out of the Darkness Walk reinforces the organization’s commitment to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and connecting community members to resources and support.

The Out of the Darkness Walk reminds those who are struggling and those who have experienced loss that they are not alone. By walking together, we help break the silence surrounding suicide and strengthen our shared commitment to hope, healing, and ensuring that support is available when people need it most,” said Robin Govanlu, Chief of Behavioral Health.
Local organizations and community members of all ages are invited to join the walk on October 10 and support the dedicated mission of suicide prevention. Check-in begins at 10 a.m. The walk starts at 11 a.m.
