Olympia Class of 1965 Dedicates Bench
On Saturday, November 28, 2015 members of the Greece Olympia Class of 1965, along with Kathleen Graupman, Superintendent of the Greece Central School District, held a dedication ceremony for a memorial bench in front of their Alma Mater in honor of all those who served in the Military.
The 1965 graduating class of Greece Olympia High School was the largest ever in the Greece Central School District’s history. Of the approximately 560 students, at least 108 are Military Veterans with 47 of them serving in Viet Nam and one killed in action.
The project was coordinated by retired U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. Maj. William Sauers.
The bench was supplied by Dan Pearl of Natural Stone Works in the Town of Greece.
Alumni Gary Beikirch, a former U.S. Army Sergeant and Medal of Honor recipient, wrote the text inscribed on the memorial. The inscription reads, “The Class of 1965 hopes this bench will be a reminder to current and future students of Olympia of the commitment and sacrifices of past students and an inspiration to them to serve their community and country.”
