Greece Police Department announces C.A.R.E. Alert program

Chief Wood is pleased to introduce the C.A.R.E. Alert program, a voluntary initiative fostering collaboration between officers and the Greece community to enhance communication with individuals with special needs.

The C.A.R.E. Alert program is designed to support individuals with conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Autism, Dementia, Down’s Syndrome, mental illness, or substance use disorders. By choosing to register, community members can provide key information – such as communication preferences, potential triggers, and calming techniques – that helps officers respond more effectively during emergencies.

Purpose and Value
This voluntary program enables officers to proactively identify and understand the needs of vulnerable individuals, ensuring a safer, more informed response. It is especially valuable for individuals prone to wandering or requiring specialized care. By sharing this critical information, officers can act swiftly to locate and assist those in need, while minimizing the risk of escalation during crises.

Enrollment Process
Community members or their guardians can submit an enrollment form along with a recent photo. Once verified, the information is linked to the individual’s address through the Office of Emergency Communications (O.E.C.). This ensures officers have access to the details they need when responding to calls involving a registered participant.

Programs like C.A.R.E. Alert have been implemented successfully in other departments across the country. The Greece Police Department is proud to be the first to bring this valuable, community-centered program to our town.
