The Brockport Police Stetson Club is sponsoring two events which will be part of the first Low Bridge, High Water canal opening celebration in Brockport the first week in May.
Stetson Club President Brian Winant told Village Board members during their regular meeting March 26, that the club is sponsoring “Pizza Wars” Sunday, May 5 at 12 noon at the Welcome Center near the canal. He said local pizza shops in Brockport and the surrounding area (Spencerport, Bergen, Holley, etc.) are welcome to participate.
“There will be awards in categories like best overall and best crust,” Officer Winant said.
The Stetson Club will also hold the 1st “Barge Charge” 5K Race on Saturday, May 4 at 2 p.m. Winant said registration will take place at Corbett Park.
Anyone interested in finding out more or participating in either event can contact Winant via email at thestetsonclub@yahoo.com.
Officer Winant also presented the Village with a $200 donation from the Stetson Club – half of which will go towards the canal opening celebration and half of which will go towards the memorial tree planting in honor of former village mayor Jim Stull.
The planting is planned for April 26 at 12:30 p.m. in Remembrance Park.
Trustee Margaret Blackman said donations for the tree and a dedication plaque are still being accepted. Checks should be made payable to the Village of Brockport Tree Fund with “Jim Stull” in the memo line. Cash donations can be made to the village clerk at the village hall.
Trustee Blackman, who is heading up the Low Bridge, High Water celebration, said the progressive Taste of Brockport event is coming along, with many downtown eateries planning to take part.
She announced the Erie Canal tugboat DeWitt Clinton, a medium sized working tug, will be in Brockport for the celebration and will be available for tours.
