Wheatland and Chili to prepare Agriculture & Farmland Protection plan

The Towns of Wheatland and Chili will hold a public informational meeting on Wednesday, July 31 at 7 p.m. at the Wheatland Municipal Building, 22 Main Street, Scottsville to “kick off” the Towns of Wheatland and Chili Agriculture and Farmland Protection plan. The plan will identify strategies to encourage agriculture in the towns, retain high quality farmland for continued agricultural production and support the contributions of agriculture to the regional economy. The Towns of Wheatland and Chili expect to complete the plan by summer 2014.

Farmers, farmland owners, and residents are invited to attend to help identify issues and opportunities that may affect the future of farmland and agriculture in the towns.

The meeting will include a presentation about agriculture in the two towns as well as an overview of how the plan will be prepared. Participants will be encouraged to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats relating to agriculture and farmland protection in the towns. Planning consultant Barbara Johnston of LaBella Associates will facilitate the meeting.
