Author Jay Kirk

Author Jay Kirk signs a copy of his book, Kingdom Under Glass for Clarendon Town Clerk Susan Colby.

The book is the biography of Clarendon native Carl Akeley considered the father of modern taxidermy.

Kirk was in Clarendon May 21 for a celebration in honor of Akeley’s 150th birthday hosted by the Clarendon Historical Society.

The evening included a talk by Kirk and by taxidermist John Janelli, an authority on the life of Akeley. Janelli credited Akeley with preserving the mountain gorilla from extinction as part of his taxidermy and conservation work.

More than 125 people attended the event held at the Clarendon Fire Hall. Birthday cake was served as part of the celebration.
