Genesee Country Museum hosts Laura Ingalls Wilder Days
Join Genesee Country Village & Museum on Saturday and Sunday, August 6 and 7, as the museum celebrates the writings of Laura Ingalls Wilder with a return visit from celebrity guest actress Karen Grassle and two days packed with fun activities drawn from the life of the Ingalls family.
Historian William Anderson, author of the newly published The Selected Letters of Laura Ingalls Wilder, will also be on site for autographs and a talk about his research.
The Little House books, written in the late 1800s, chronicled Laura Ingalls’ life with her family in the Midwest. Laura Ingalls Wilder Days celebrate rural life in the 19th century as seen through Laura’s eyes.
Grassle is best known for her role as Caroline “Ma” Ingalls on the NBC television drama Little House on the Prairie, which ran from 1974 to 1983. She will talk about her role on the series during a noon presentation, answer questions and sign autographs.
The autograph session will take place at 2 p.m. and will include the opportunity to take a photograph with Grassle as well as have her sign a book or other memento, for an additional cost of $20. Tickets for the autograph session are required.
Anderson, whose latest work presents a “fresh look at the adult life of the author in her own words,” has written or edited some two dozen books on Laura and her family.
Among the days’ events will be activities that bring Laura’s world to life, including handkerchief doll-making, churning butter, pounding corn plus myriad 19th-century activities, games and contests from barrel racing and sack races to a pig bladder toss and more.
Young visitors are also invited to dress in their favorite prairie costumes for a fashion promenade.
Museum hours are: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission costs adults $20; youth (4-16) $12, seniors 62+ and students with ID $17, children under 3 admitted free. For further information, visit www.gcv.org or call 294-8218.
