Landscape Technicians Training accepting applications

Landscape Technicians Training has been offered to individuals in the Finger Lakes area since 1994. Hundreds of people have graduated from the program over the years. Students have included individuals who are seeking their first job to people who are retiring from their current career and looking for a new path for a second career. There have also been students who own a business or want to start a business and want to expand their horticultural knowledge and others who want this information for their personal use.

Classes run March 7 through April 15, 2022, and meet every Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the lower level of the County Parks Building, 171 Reservoir Avenue, Rochester. The training is accessible by bus for those who prefer public transportation. Most of the classes are taught by people who have chosen horticulture as their career – so information, while research-based, is presented in easy-to-understand language by individuals who perform this work every day. For those seeking employment, there is daily interaction with employers.

Class topics range from Soil and How Plants Function to Proper Pruning and How to Install a Paver Patio. There are weekly field trips to area businesses as well as several hands-on days, working with City of Rochester and Monroe County Parks Department staff. Students will receive their OSHA 10 Construction Safety Training Certificate.

The Landscape Technicians Training is tuition based, but there is access to funding sources that can offset or cover full tuition. For information or to request an application, contact Marci Muller, CCE Monroe Horticulture Team Leader, at mem545@cornell.edu or 585-747-2955.
