Clarkson Bicentennial events planned

The Clarkson Bicentennial Good Neighbor Day Celebration is set for Saturday, August 24. There are some events in the works that residents should be aware of with the big day about a month away.

Quilt Show

Anita O’Brien is the chair of the Quilt Show honoring the town’s 200 year anniversary. Quilts hold a special place in the history of not just Clarkson, but all across America. Quilts can illustrate the history of family weddings, graduations and love woven into intricate patterns such as Log Cabin, Bears Paw or Churn Dash. Others such as patchwork quilts reveal the story of people’s friendships, faith and their home. Others are purely creative ventures.

A quilter herself, O’Brien has spent much time remembering her grandmother – a woman who was unique and special to her – recalling homemade foods, an old favorite bedtime story, and words of wisdom shared. She remembers the doll quilt they sewed together. The stitches were large and the simple nine piece block pattern was made from old fabric that frayed. The best part of O’Brien’s memory was her grandmother’s patience with her eight year-old self, and the pride taken in a job well done.

Dust off your memories, or perhaps make new memories, and join in celebrating Clarkson’s birthday. All quilts are welcome and entries must be submitted by Augusut 1. The show is small but mighty and will be open from noon to 3 p.m. on August 24 at the Stanley Pogroszewski Justice Courthouse. This is a free event and entry forms are available at the Clarkson Town Hall or online at ClarksonNY.org.

Beard Contest

Gentlemen, get those beards in tip-top shape. A contest is scheduled so all of Clarkson will know which men have the most creative, whitest, longest or most unique beards.

Who has lived in Clarkson the longest?

Event organizers are searching the town to see which resident has lived in Clarkson the longest. Anyone with information about a person fitting this description is asked to contact the Town. This person will be the Honorary Grand Marshall of the day.

For information contact Supervisor Christa Filipowicz at 637-1131 or email: supervisor@clarksonny.org.
