Canal system update

The New York State Canal Corporation issued an update as the canal navigation season winds down.

All locks and lift bridges on the Canal system are now operating daily between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. This change went into effect on Thursday, September 17.

The Canal system is scheduled to close to navigation at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14. All recreational and commercial vessel operators should plan their trips to ensure they exit the system by that time.

Several canal maintenance projects were deferred earlier in the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The October 14 closure will allow Canal Corporation employees and contractors to begin working on the backlog of projects while the weather is still favorable. This will ensure projects are completed ahead of the 2021 season, which is currently scheduled to begin in May, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Canal users are encouraged to register to receive updates through the “Notice to Mariners” notification program at www.canals.ny.gov.
