Sweden adopts late fees for dog licensing

The Town of Sweden has adopted late fees of $5 per month for dog licenses that are not renewed within 30 days of their annual renewal date. The late fees will begin for dog licenses that renew starting January 1, 2021.

The cost of dog licenses that are renewed on time will remain at $8.50 for spayed/neutered dogs and $16.50 for unspayed/unneutered dogs. The purpose of the late fees is to encourage timely renewals. Dog licensing helps ensure that dogs are vaccinated against rabies. The Town of Sweden considers rabies to be a serious public health issue and to that end offers a no-charge rabies clinic each year. The late fee on dog licenses is another tool to make sure that dogs are vaccinated and that vaccinations are kept current.

In the town newsletter that is delivered inside this newspaper, an article explains the changes to dog licensing and impoundment fees in greater detail. At the time the newsletter went to print, the licensing late fee had not been adopted. At its December 8 meeting, the Sweden Town Board did approve the late fee charge to begin January 1, 2021.
