Spencerport’s lift bridge to be closed for two weeks

The Route 259 (Union Street) Lift Bridge over the Erie Canal in Spencerport will temporarily close to vehicular traffic for approximately two weeks, beginning April 8, to perform final lifting tests and fully commission the bridge.

While the bridge re-opened in November 2020 following a long-term closure, this work will effectively complete the rehabilitation of the Route 259 Lift Bridge, which began in 2019.

A posted detour will be in place during the bridge closure, guiding motorists using Route 104 (West Ridge Road), Route 261 (Manitou Road), and Route 31. Pedestrian traffic can use the nearby Martha Street canal bridge crossing.

Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. Convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.
