Neighbors across the region have made their JustOne gifts

Blue envelopes recently began arriving in mailboxes asking for “just one” dollar to help thousands of kids and adults with special needs served by Al Sigl’s seven Member Agencies. In one week, nearly 6,000 friends and neighbors from across the region responded to the call and made their gift.

Each dollar works together to create opportunities for people of all abilities to be included in community life. Many include handwritten notes expressing appreciation for being asked to give an amount that lets everyone get involved. Others remember the help a friend or family member received.

One note read, “You never really think about how much Al Sigl Member Agencies could do for you until you have a family member that needs it…Wish I could have sent a dollar for every day, instead of every year, of his life. Thank You!”

From the 1930s to 1950s, newspaper and radio reporter Al Sigl often shared how listeners could help others in the community. In the summer of 1945, he passed along a request from a family for a used tricycle that could be modified for a child with Cerebral Palsy. During that broadcast, he wondered aloud if there were other families facing shortages for their children. Hundreds of responses came pouring in, along with several tricycles.

Sigl’s belief that we can achieve more together resonates in the continued success of the JustOne campaign, which turns 32 this year. To donate, visit alsigl.org/justone or text “AlSigl” to 56651.

Al Sigl Member Agencies include CP Rochester, EPI, Medical Motor Service, National Multiple Sclerosis Society Upstate NY, Rochester Hearing & Speech Center, Rochester Rehabilitation, and Starbridge.
