Monroe County Soil & Water Conservation District (MCSWCD) is hosting the 30th annual Envirothon on May 12 at Monroe County’s Ellison Park. After being unable to hold a live, outdoor Envirothon event for local high school students during the pandemic, the District is excited and happy to welcome them back this year.
The Envirothon is an annual outdoor, environmental education competition for high school students. Teams of five compete against each other to demonstrate their knowledge in five core topics: wildlife, aquatics, forestry, soils, and current issues which is selected at a national level each year. This year’s current issue topic is Waste to Resources. The winning team will represent Monroe County at the New York State competition being held on the campus of Hobart & William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY on May 25 and 26. The winner of the NYS Envirothon will go on to compete in the National Envirothon in Oxford, Ohio on July 24 through 30.
Each year, MCSWCD invites local high schools to send teams of students ready to compete against other schools, along with each other, for a chance to compete in the state-level Envirothon. Teams from Brighton High School, Brockport High School, Eastridge High School, and Honeoye Falls-Lima High School have been hard at work creating presentations and studying for their chance to take it all at the live event. This event asks students to use learned knowledge, critical thinking, and their surroundings to help prepare them for future environmental careers and gain an appreciation for each environmental topic.
