Vanishing Sun: Impressions of the Infinite

After sold-out performances in November 2021, Vanishing Sun returns to the Strasenburgh Planetarium on May 15 to perform as an opening act for a lunar eclipse. Shows will be held at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Science and the arts collide in this unique and musical planetarium experience. Impressions of the Infinite combines the Planetarium’s immersive visualization capabilities with original music performed live by the Rochester-based jazz-funk-electronic ensemble Vanishing Sun to create a unique journey for the eyes, ears, heart, and mind.

The hour-long multimedia creation includes vague premonitions, grand vistas of cosmic insight, and brilliant and relentless plunges through high-energy space remniscent of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. The music brings distant curious noises, pretty piano solos, thundering bass lines, and complex layered rhythms. Conceived as a project to mark the Strasenburgh Planetarium’s fiftieth-anniversary renovation, Impressions of the Infinite will be a highlight in the Planetarium’s history of artistic collaborations.
