Spencerport man to become top enlisted leader in Army National Guard Command

Spencerport resident Marc Maynard, a command sergeant major in the New York Army National Guard, and a veteran of the Afghanistan and Iraq War, who also helped trained Ukraine’s army in 2018, will become the top enlisted Soldier in the New York Army National Guard’s 53rd Troop Command on Sunday, May 15.

Maynard will be the highest ranking enlisted Soldier in the 4,400-member troop command which has Soldiers located across New York. He reports directly to Brig. Gen. Jack James, the commander of the 53rd Troop Command.

The 53rd Troop Command is one of the New York Army National Guard’s two general officer commands and is comprised of combat support and combat service support units, like military police, signal, transportation, engineer, and logistics units.

Maynard will replace Command Sgt. Major Thomas Ciampolillo who is retiring assignment.

The change of responsibility ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, at Camp Smith Training Site, which is the New York National Guard’s major training location in the Hudson Valley near Peekskill. The 53rd Troop Command is headquartered at Camp Smith.

Maynard began his military career in September of 1986 at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. He served with the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle Hull System Mechanic until 1988. After completing his tour of duty, he transferred into the National Guard and reclassified as a motor transport operator in 1991.

He deployed with the 719th Transportation Company to Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and later deployed as a First Sergeant to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. CSM Maynard also participated in several other New York state relief missions.

His previous assignments include CSM of the 642nd Aviation Support Battalion. The battalion was mobilized in support of recovery efforts for Hurricane Sandy in 2012. He served as the CSM of the 427th Brigade Support Battalion from 2013 to 2015 and then as the Regimental CSM for the 106th Regional Training Institute until October of 2020.

During his time at the Regional Training Institute, Maynard deployed as the 27th Brigade command sergeant major to Ukraine as part of the Joint Multinational Training Group – Ukraine in 2018.

He is currently serving as the command sergeant major for the 153rd Troop Command headquartered in Buffalo, and served during the unit’s deployment for Operation Civil Unrest in Washington D.C., January 2021.

Maynard is a graduate of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Divinity from Northstar Bible Institute.

He is the Electronics and Calibration Supervisor at Combined Maintenance Support Shop C in Rochester, and resides in Spencerport with his wife, Sherry, and two of their four children.
