Legion Auxiliary donates to Batavia VA; encourages others to do the same

Recently, Churchville’s Harvey C. Noone American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 954, presented Cindy Baker, Center for Development and Civic Engagement Specialist with the Batavia VA Medical Center, with a donation of $300. The donation will help purchase canteen books. These books contain coupons that allow resident veterans to purchase haircuts.

While some items are supplied by the hospital, the veterans are also in need of additional personal care items. The Batavia VA currently has 66 patients residing, one female and sixty-five males.  For those who would like to donate, the medical center residents are looking for full size toiletry items which include, but are not limited to, deodorant, body wash, shaving items, nail clippers/manicure set, hairbrush/comb, shampoo/conditioner, Fixodent, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and diabetic socks. Clothes are also needed. They are requesting polo shirts and sweatpants; sizes range from Large to 8XL. Please note the VA is not allowed to accept used clothing.

For the residents’ rooms, donations of calendars and warm, Twin size blankets/quilts for their beds are appreciated. Arts and crafts items are also requested, including adult coloring books, colored pencils, outdoor lawn games (like Cornhole), etc.

In addition to personal items, the Batavia VA is also able to accept gift cards for various uses in any amount.

Sponsorship of activities such as bingo, ice-cream socials, pizza night, movie night, holiday events, summer picnics, etc. is also appreciated. Sponsorship can come from an individual or a company/organization.

Those who would like to donate to the Batavia VA Medical Center, have the following options:

•Call Cindy Baker directly at 585-297-1196 and arrange drop off at 222 Richmond Avenue, Batavia, throughout the year.

•Drop off to the bartender at the Churchville American Legion, 6444 Buffalo Road, Churchville, on Thursday or Friday evenings between 6 and 9 p.m. throughout the year.

•Drop off at the American Legion during the Chicken Barbecue sponsored by Churchville Lions Club and Churchville American Legion on Saturday, August 13, from noon to 2 p.m. The barbecue is a ticketed event. Tickets are $15 and are available at the Churchville American Legion, Churchville Village Hall, Newman Riga Library, and My Kinda Place. Tickets are limited and must be pre-purchased; available until August 1 or until sold out).

Veterans have sacrificed greatly for our country and freedom. They are so appreciative when they are thought of and remembered during holidays, Valentine’s Day, and any day of the year. A donation is a way to show them you care and is very much welcomed.

The Batavia VA Medical Center is also looking for volunteers and is hiring. Visit their website for more information about an upcoming job fair.
